Philip Kelly: Migration, Remittances, Development and Alternatives in Southeast Asia
Professor of Geography at York University (Toronto, Canada) and Director of the York Centre for Asian Research. Born in Liverpool, England, he was trained as a geographer at Oxford, McGill and the University of British Columbia, and started his teaching career in the Southeast Asian Studies Programme of the National University of Singapore. His research has examined the global dimensions of Philippine development, immigrant labor market processes and intergenerational mobility in Canada, and transnational economic ties between Canada and the Philippines. His publications include Migration, Agrarian Transition and Rural Change in Southeast Asia (New York: Routledge, 2013) and Economic Geography: A Contemporary Introduction (with Neil Coe and Henry Yeung, Second Edition, New Jersey: Wiley-Blackwell, 2013).
Sarah Turner: Livelihoods on the Margins: Trade in the Sino-Vietnamese Borderlands
Professor of Geography, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Professor Turner is an expert on rural livelihoods and upland ethnic minorities, cross-border trade, and informal economies in Vietnam and southwest China.
Meg Rithmire: Political Vulnerability and Transnational Investment: Southeast Asian Business Networks in China
Assistant Professor, Business Administration, Business, Government, and the International Economy Unit, Harvard Business School, Harvard University, is an expert on the comparative political economy of development with a focus on China. Her first book, Land Bargains and Chinese Capitalism (Cambridge University Press, 2015), examines the role of land politics, urban governments, and local property rights regimes in the Chinese economic reforms. A new project investigates the influence of diasporas, and the overseas Chinese communities in particular, in the progress of economic and political reforms in the homeland.
Jia Ye: Spatializing the Global City: a Relational Analysis of Migrants, Migration and Development in Singapore
Lecturer in Human Geography, Massey University, New Zealand. Dr. Ye’s research interests lie at the intersections of cultural diversity, critical cosmopolitanism, class, gender studies and the political-economic development of urban Southeast Asia particularly Singapore.
Weidong LIU: The Blet and Road Initiative and its Implications for Southeast Asia
Professor of Economic Geography and Deputy Director of the Department of Human Geography and Regional Development, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, CAS, President of Economic Geography Committee of GSC. Prof. Liu is also the Director of the center of strategy research of “One belt, one road”. Prof. Liu is an expert on economic geography and regional development studies, spatial implications of new information and communication technologies, global production network and foreign direct investment in China, regional development and disparities in China, and Local and regional sustainable development.

Professor of Geography and Executive Dean, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University. Prof. He is the Associate Director of the Peking University–Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy and also the associate director of the Economic Geography Specialty Group of the China Geographical Society. Prof. He’s research interests include multinational corporations, industrial location and spatial clustering of firms, and energy and the environment in China. The World Bank invited him to write a background paper on industrial agglomeration in China for the World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Global Economic Geography.
Debin Du: The Rise of China and the Expansion of the Economic Rights Space
Professor of Geography, Dean of the College of Urban and Regional Sciences and Director of the National Strategic Research Base of the Ministry of Education and China Institute of Scientific Innovation and Development Strategy, East China Normal University. Prof. Du is the Director of the World Geography Specialty Group of the China Geographical Society. Prof. Du’s research interests include geopolitics, technological innovation & policy and world geography.
